Series 3
Lightweight, 24 volt, runs, drives, MoT'd, great project

(More photos
at foot of page)
Here we have a
Series 3 Lightweight, 24 volt, built 1980 or thereabouts (I haven't
yet seen the V5). This vehicle runs, drives and has some MoT (I
am told February but cannot confirm this as I have not yet seen the documents).
This is being sold as a project vehicle: I have not done anything to
it other than have a look round it and a short test drive. As
such it is sold as seen with absolutely no warranty.
Good points:
-
Very original
vehicle, almost untouched since it left military service. Original
unmolested Lightweights are getting really hard to find - the last
few were demobbed in 1993 and most of them have either been
worked to destruction or heavily modified. This one retains pretty
much all the distinctive Lightweight features such as flat-ended
halfshafts, most of the 24 volt radio wiring, glassfibre wiper motor
cover and column shroud (these often break and get thrown away),
screw-in military light lenses, split tailgate with pioneer tool
mounting brackets, shielded ignition system etc etc.
-
Straight body
panels under all that flaking military paint.
-
Rollover hoop
with upper mounts for seat belts - makes it easy to fit inertia reel
belts (it currently has static belts).
-
Smooth, sweet
2.25 petrol engine (5 bearing).
-
Four good tyres.
-
Newish looking
twin fuel tanks. These are over £200 each new.
-
Runs and
drives - steering, brakes and suspension all feel OK, gearbox seems
fine although it whines a little (like most Series boxes).
Springs are good and the vehicle sits nice and level.
-
Vehicle is
MoT'd and can be driven away (subject to purchaser sorting out tax
and insurance).
Not so good points:
-
Chassis seems
mostly sound as far as I can tell. Much of it is covered in
thick Army-issue underseal which is cracking and flakiing off as it
tends to do. It definitely needs a nearside bulkhead outrigger:
the rear crossmember is a civilian pattern replacement which is
starting to rot, and there is some really terrible welding on the
rear end of the chassis, around and just forward of the rear spring hangers.
That is all the rot I can see, but I cannot promise that it is all
there is.
-
Bulkhead
really needs new outer panels and possibly footwells (although they
would patch for now). Also new under-wing mud shields.
All these parts are readily available.
-
Clutch judders badly.
The back end of the engine is quite oily, so I suspect the rear crank
oil seal is leaking and has contaminated the clutch plate with oil.
Vehicle is still drivable and the clutch does not slip but it is
really annoying in traffic jams.
-
Canvas roof
appears to have bullet holes in it...
-
Door tops are
past their best although the bottoms are fine.
-
The original
24 volt alternator has been replaced with one from a truck. Not
an issue as such, it works fine, but if you are planning to return
the vehicle to original condition I have the correct type alternator
available to buy.
Owner is
looking for offers around £2,250, which isn't dear for a
straight original vehicle. This would make an excellent winter
project - to be honest it doesn't really need a huge amount of work
to sort the issues that I can see, so if you buy it soon enough you
should have it ready for when the snow comes :)
