Series 2A 88 inch truck

Offered for
sale on behalf of a customer this is a very pretty, straight, solid
and largely original Series 2A. First registered 1966 (and
therefore tax exempt) it has had a few sensible improvements but
retains most of its original features and period charm.
Good points:
-
Chassis and
bulkhead are both very good indeed. Chassis has had the usual
repairs you would expect of a vehicle this age including rear quarter
chassis (looks to have been done quite recently), front dum irons,
various outriggers etc. All the repairs look to have been done to a
good standard, the chassis has been sprayed with black Waxoyl but not
undersealed so I do not think it is hiding anything nasty. The
bulkhead has had new footwells (neatly done) and I can find no rot in
the usual places (top corners, top rail, lower door pillars etc).
There is some filler in the bottom of the passenger side door pillar
and a few areas of surface rust which would benefit from attention at
some point.
-
Body is
generally straight and original and has not been hacked about,
It has the correct wings, front panel, and deep sill panels for the
age of vehicle. Doors are sound - tops showing early signs of
corrosion, bottoms have a couple of rusty areas in the frames but
should las several more years before requiring replacement.
There are a few minor dents and scrapes and the paint finish is
looking a little tired - very smart from a distance, but not what I
would call show standard, and some areas have been brush painted
(although you would have to look closely to tell).
-
Modifications
include alternator charging, halogen headlight conversion, five
almost new 205R16 Avon radial tyres on Wolf tubeless rims (I have a
bill for just short of £800 for these) and a very neat cover for
the load area. There is also a stereo although I have not
tested it yet,
-
Vehicle has
correct type dash panel (body coloured, large warning lights,
combined ignition/light switch), Smiths round heater, individual
wiper motors for driver and passenger, 'sticky-out' door hinges - all
correct for the age. Seats are standard square black vinyl and look
almost new. At present it has no seatbelts which is a little odd - as
a 'dual purpose' vehicle built after 1965 it really should have them
- this will be sorted out before sale.
Bad points:
-
Engine - is
very tired and currently in bits. It came into the workshop
running on three cylinders due to low compression, also down on oil
pressure and the clutch judders badly, so it really needs to come
out. A pity as I reckon from the serial number that it is
probably the original. Several options here - rebuild the old
engine (crank grind, rebore, new pistons, head overhaul); drop in a
good second hand engine, ideally a 5 bearing unit with an unleaded
head; upgrade to a 2.5 petrol from a Defender; or convert to diesel -
either a 2.25 Series engine, a 2.5NA from a Defender, one of my '200Di'
conversions or a 200TDi. Or perhaps even a V8. I am open to
negotiation on this one - at the moment the old engine is still in
the vehicle but with the head removed.
-
Due to the
engine issues I have not had a chance to road test the vehicle so I
do not know how good the gearbox is. The owner tells me that it
is a little noisy (in the favourite phrase of the motor trade 'they
all do that, Sir') but does not jump out of gear or otherwise
misbehave. Obviously if it is broken I will have to sort it out, but
don't expect it to be silent especially in the lower gears.
-
Springs are
starting to look tired and the vehicle has a noticeable lean to the
drivers side. Depending on budget I can either leave this for
another day, fit new standard springs (there are some very good
quality ones now available at a reasonable price) or upgrade to parabolics.
-
Vehicle has no
overdrive, no soundproofing, non-servo brakes, original 2A gearbox
with no synchromesh on first or second. Even in perfect
condition it will be crude, noisy, bouncy and heavy to drive.
As I said before, 'they all do that, Sir'.
Vehicle is
taxed (at zero rate) and MoT'd through to next April.
